In deze voorstelling versmelten muziek en dans tot een hedendaagse interpretatie van het klassieke verhaal van Layla en Majnun. Dit Arabische liefdesverhaal uit de 7e eeuw gaat over een onmogelijke liefde, over verboden passie die leidt tot waanzin en vervreemding.

Al Rawi en musici van het Amsterdams Andalusisch Orkest brengen een moderne versie van dit eeuwenoude verhaal en combineren hiphop, straatstijlen en flamenco met Arabo-Andalusische live-muziek.

Majnun onderzoekt vervreemding niet als een tekort, maar als een bron van kracht en verbeelding. In een tijd waarin culturele en sociale kaders steeds nauwer lijken te worden, nodigt Majnun uit om de illusies en maskers van identiteit te doorbreken en de vrijheid te vinden in het ongrijpbare.

Over de makers

Amira al Rawi is een autodidacte danseres en theatermaker met een achtergrond in hiphop en straatstijlen. Ze put uit dansstijlen die hun wortels hebben in verzet en non-conformisme, zoals hiphop all-styles, Waacking en House dance. Recentelijk voegde ze flamenco toe, wat haar artistieke taal verder verdiept.

Het Amsterdams Andalusisch Orkest (AAO) groeide uit tot een ensemble dat traditie en vernieuwing moeiteloos met elkaar verbindt. In hun werk laten zij zich inspireren door stijlen die openstaan voor experiment en uitwisseling, zoals jazz, flamenco en hedendaagse compositie. In 2024 ontving het orkest de Cultuurfonds Prijs.

Majnun explores alienation not as a deficiency, but as a source of strength and imagination. In a time when cultural and social frameworks seem to be narrowing, Majnun invites us to break through the illusions and masks of identity and find freedom in the elusive.

About the creators

Amira al Rawi is a self-taught dancer and theatre maker with a background in hip-hop and street styles. She draws from dance styles rooted in resistance and nonconformism, such as hip hop all-styles, Waacking, and House dance. Recently, she added flamenco, which further deepens her artistic language.

The Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra (AAO) has grown into an ensemble that effortlessly connects tradition and innovation. In their work, they draw inspiration from styles open to experimentation and exchange, such as jazz, flamenco, and contemporary composition. In 2024, the orchestra received the Cultuurfonds Prize.
