In Om de hoek woont een struik brengt makersduo Plankton, Sonja van Ojen en Hendrik Kegels, een zelfgebouwde miniatuurstad tot leven. Niet de mensen, maar de Esdoorn, de Lantaarnpalen, het Openbare Toilet, de Schoorsteen, de Kevers onder de tegels en de Kiosk op het plein spelen de hoofdrol.

De dag breekt aan, een vuilnisbak waait om, een plastic zakje verstrikt zich in de takken van een boom, een duif poept op het standbeeld, de krokussen gaan open. Deze heerlijk fantasievolle en woordeloze voorstelling wordt begeleid door een filmische soundtrack van Studio Ree (Frederik de Clercq).

Theaterkrant: “In Om de hoek woont een struik zijn het de dingen, de muren, de DIXI-toiletten en de ondergrondse keien die tot leven komen… Zo stimuleren de makers de fantasie én de aandacht voor onze omgeving – eenmaal weer buiten valt ieder kleurig detail je op, van een scheef paaltje tot balkons in aanbouw. En voor je het weet, rijd je met een nieuw verhaal in je hoofd over een rotonde.”

Om de hoek woont een struik is één van de drie winnaars van de BNG bank Theaterprijs 2020 en werd geselecteerd voor Het Nederlands Theater Festival 2021.

Over de makers

Plankton maakt beeldend theater voor alle leeftijden. Het werk van het makersduo is beeldend, absurdistisch en speels. Sonja van Ojen en Hendrik Kegels studeerden allebei af aan de performance-opleiding van de Toneelacademie Maastricht. Samen maakten ze eerder de voorstellingen Phantom Island en Microlepidoptera. Zij zijn verbonden aan het Makershuis Tilburg en Feikes Huis en in het najaar van 2021 startte het duo een vierjarig taaltraject bij Stip jeugdtheaterproducties.

In Around the corner lives a bush, maker duo Plankton, Sonja van Ojen and Hendrik Kegels, brings a self-built miniature city to life. Not the people, but the Maple, the Lampposts, the Public Toilet, the Chimney, the Beetles under the tiles and the Kiosk on the square play the leading role. The day breaks, a garbage can blows over, a plastic bag gets entangled in the branches of a tree, a pigeon defecates on the statue, the crocuses open. This wonderfully imaginative and wordless performance is accompanied by a cinematic soundtrack by Studio Ree (Frederik de Clercq).

The work of the creative duo is visual, absurdist and playful. Sonja van Ojen and Hendrik Kegels both graduated from the performance course at the Maastricht Theatre Academy. Together they previously made the performances Phantom Island and Microlepidoptera. They are affiliated with the Makershuis Tilburg and Feikes Huis and in the autumn of 2021 the duo started a four-year language program at Stip youth theater productions.
